Tee off at The Address Montgomerie, with the backdrop of Dubai Marina as your game view
Address Montgomerie is the ideal place for golfers of all levels to challenge a course that is truly an unforgettable experience. The course is by Colin Montgomerie, who won a record eight European Tour Order of Merit titles, including a streak of seven consecutively – from 1993 to 1999. Montgomerie has won over 31 European Tour events, the most from any British player, placing him fourth on the all-time list of golfers with the most European Tour victories. With credentials like this as a player, and in association with renowned course designer Desmond Muirhead, you cannot help yourself from being overly excited to challenge the course.
The Championship Course at Address Montgomerie is a links-style course that features 14 lakes, 81 bunkers, and the largest single green in the world at 58,000 square feet. Generous “links land” fairways and deceptive, undulating greens challenge golfers even further. The course is immaculate and is a true links style course, right slap bang in the middle of Emirates Hills and Meadows, a densely built-up affluent area of new Dubai.
A signature hole on the golf course that gives you the feeling of being Tiger at heart, is the par-5 fourth hole, (the “Snake hole” because of its saddleback fairway which doglegs towards the green, with two bunkers behind forming the eyes of the snake). The par 5 ninth, with water down the left, is a tough finish to the opening half. A long hole that depending on the wind, humidity and day, has you seeking each club to reach the green before putting out.
Muirhead could have either been brilliant or quirky when designing courses, with the par 3 thirteenth designed in the shape of the UAE – a testament to his personality. It has a 360-degree teeing area around an island green, allowing for a completely different golf hole to be played every time. This may sound a bit contrived but the quality of the greenery and the overlooking half-way house makes this a memorable set piece. There are several other memorable holes that are beautiful, firm, true and tricky greens. Don’t be fooled by the widespread fairways, accuracy is a must, because just a little of the fairway or wrong angle approach leaves you few options at par or below. This is truly a course worth the challenge, but nothing designed to break the average golfer’s spirit. We noticed a hand-shaped bunker protecting the green on the 17th, and perhaps the best hole is the par 5 eighteenth – some 656 yards with water protecting the front of the green, it defies even the best player to hit the green in two. In fact, water is in play for just about each shot except for your putt.
In addition to the Championship Course, Address Montgomerie Dubai Golf Club offers a par-3 golf course that is ideal for beginners. The Novice:
After having done one beginner’s lesson prior to this, I was taken to the golf academy to perfect my swing, the power of each putt, and basically learn how to hit the ball in the right direction. I was given a bucket of balls to practice with, and a learner’s club with the finger marking for placement. My coach Ricky Neil-Jones was quite patient, encouraging and complimenting me with every attempt, while correcting any wrong move instantly. A tip I picked up was to aim for the grass, so as to take a little off it off while hitting for the ball with force. My posture and angle were immediately fixed too, as I realised my body twisted in a certain angle with the position changing the minute the club touched the ball.
As the heat started to kick in, with humidity levels rising, we decided to depart. I realised by the end of the session I could hit farther along, in the direction it was meant to head off in, and with the force required. The Academy offers a long-term development programme with four months’ access to the academy facilities, development and trackman lessons, physical screening, and plenty more, including a round of 18 holes of golf.
