The emirate ranked higher than the likes of New York, London and Tokyo

Are you one of the many partaking in the nine-to-five grind in Dubai while harbouring hopes of getting to work on that stellar business idea that can churn out millions faster than Conor McGregor swears? Well, as it turns out, you’re in one of the best cities to help accomplish those dreams.

According to a survey conducted by furnished apartments platform Nestpick, Dubai ranked 29 out of 85 cities in the world in the Startup Cities Index. The survey was conducted with the objective of discovering which cities offer the best quality of life for those employed in the startup industry.

The ranking is divided into five categories: Startup Ecosystem, Salary, Social Security & Benefits, Cost of Living, and Quality of Life. According to the index, Dubai tops the world on Income Tax Score, bagging 5 out of possible 5 on the parameter (no surprises there since we pay zero income tax), but also scores quite well on Safety (4.72) and Healthcare (4.54).

Coming in at 29, Dubai beat other, more established cities and supposed startup havens like New York, London and Tokyo. Moreover, after a quick look, we found that an experienced techie working at a startup in Dubai takes home an average Dhs280,000 per year – that’s the 14th best pay in the world for people in similar professions.

Of course, if you’ve been paying attention, none of this will come as news. Young people in the region are constantly encouraged to think out of the box. Careem, yallacompare, Fetchr, Talabat, Souq and others are just a few examples of young companies established in Dubai.

Dubai finished at 29, but the top 5 cities in the world for startups include:

  1. Singapore, Singapore
  2. Helsinki, Finland
  3. San Francisco, USA
  4. Berlin, Germany
  5. Stockholm, Sweden
